Cool and Wet Forecast for August in Illinois

The forecasts for August and the three-month period of August-October show most of Illinois with an increased chance of being cooler and wetter than average.

A significant El Niño event has developed in the Pacific Ocean and has a 90% chance of remaining throughout 2015 and an 80% chance of remaining until next spring. This is expected to have significant impacts on the weather in the US.

El Niño events occur when the waters in the eastern Pacific along the equator are warmer than usual. This changes the weather patterns over the Pacific and US.

August

A large band with an increased chance of being cooler and wetter than average stretches from the Southwest to the Midwest. All of Illinois has an increased chance of being cooler than average. The southern half of Illinois has an increased chance of being wetter than average.

August-September-October

The August-October forecast looks like the August forecast with all of Illinois having an increased chance of being cooler than average. The southern half of Illinois has an increased chance of being wetter than average.

  2. It’s not likely – consider a forecast for cooler weather by August standards, but not cold weather. What’s interesting is that the temperature in August is a terrible predictor of an early frost, which usually arrive sometime in September.
